1834 Political Hard Times Token Running Boar/Perish Credit HT9 XF+.
ca 1834. Satirical anti-Jackson token. The Whigs vehemently opposed the closing of the 2nd Bank of the United States, so they issued tokens like this one. Obverse: The use of the word MY, refers to what the Whigs felt was Jackson’s use of dictatorial powers to control the United States assets. PERISH CREDIT PERISH COMMERCE was what the Whigs believed would happen as a result of closing the National Bank. The running boar may symbolize Jackson’s fiscal policies “running wild” and causing havoc. MY THIRD HEAT. refers to Jackson’s third try at the presidency (1824, 1828, & 1832). MY VICTORY & DOWN WITH THE BANK refers to Jackson crippling the Bank. Reverse: MY SUBSTITUTE FOR THE U.S. BANK, MY / EXPERIMENT / MY / CURRENCY MY / GLORY are all mocking referrals casting all as unsuccessful.
